J.P. Weigand & Sons Inc. founder John Patrick Weigand never drove an automobile. His modest beginnings included subleasing desk space in a retail storeroom on Market Street, after coming to Wichita by covered wagon in 1902, and declaring it the next boomtown. He did his business on foot, and had printed on his business card a prophecy of Wichita’s growth that included the words “I am for Wichita” and “Come watch us grow.”
Today, the company Weigand started has grown to include 250 residential associates, 20 commercial associates and about 65 staff members. The company has 10 offices in Sedgwick, Butler, Harvey, Sumner and Reno counties. Weigand is ranked in the top 500 real estate firms in the United States for its residential business alone, closing more than $330 million in business in 2000. It is the largest commercial and residential real estate company in the Wichita area, according to the Wichita Business Journal’s 2001 Book of Lists.
